Appraisal and Revalidation

Dr Zulfiqar is a fully trained medical appraiser and Responsible Officer in the knowledge and skills to carry out appraisals for revalidation. He is also trained as a Case Manager by National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS), which enables him to be an appropriately trained individual who manages the process to determine whether there is a problem to address in a doctor’s performance.

The role involves determining if there is a case to answer based on evidence available including that in the investigation report if an investigation is deemed appropriate. He regularly undertakes appraiser refresher courses and attends appraiser peer review meetings. Dr Zulfiqar held the duties of Responsible Officer previously. In this regard, he attended Responsible Officer network meetings organised by NHS England and meetings with GMC Employer Liaison Adviser (ELA). He also acted a key note speaker for appraisal and revalidation seminars in UK and Ireland.

Dr Zulfiqar carries out appraisals for designated bodies, locum agencies and organisation supporting appraisal and revalidation in UK. He carries out appraisal of doctors without a connection. He understands the context, scope and nature of work the appraisee doctor undertakes and understands the professional obligations placed on doctors by the GMC’s guidance Good medical practice. He sees and verifies the fitness for purpose of the supporting information an appraisee doctor brings to their appraisal.
